My W2 was already opened when I got it… should I be worried?

Just got my W2 in the mail, but it arrived in one of those plastic USPS envelopes they use when mail gets damaged. The actual W2 envelope was completely opened and then taped shut again before I got it.

Should I be worried about identity theft or anything like that? Not sure where else to ask about this.

Go request an IP PIN right now. It’ll help prevent someone from using your info to file a fraudulent tax return.

Is your Social Security number blacked out on the W2?

No, it has my name, Social Security number, and address all clearly visible. Based on the crinkling in the corner of the W2, I’m pretty sure someone has looked at the whole thing.

@Milo
File your taxes as soon as possible and request an IP PIN for next year.

Also, keep an eye on your credit reports just in case.

You might even want to freeze your credit with all three major bureaus. A credit monitoring service could also help by alerting you if someone tries to open an account using your info.

Yeah, definitely freeze it with all three. I had to do it last year because of all these security breaches happening everywhere.

Freeze your credit reports ASAP—honestly, it’s a good idea in general. Keep an eye out for any suspicious activity.

Also, now might be a good time to go through your passwords and make sure they’re all strong and unique.

It’s a hassle, but taking action now can save you from a much bigger headache later.
