I work with a small non-profit and they issue a few 1099-NEC’s each year – normally under 10. But this year it turns out to be 12, and that’s over the IRS required limit for e-filing. They don’t have an e-file IRS account. I’ll start setting one up in the next couple of days, but according to the IRS, it takes up to 45 days to get the number, and that’s way past the 1099 filing deadline. Any recommendations for what to do to get them in on time this year? I don’t have emails for the sub-cons, so I’ll need to send sub-cons their copies by mail, which seems to be okay.
Not free but cheap, and you can e-file them immediately.

I filed 2 days ago and it still says pending… what’s up with that on Tax1099?

Not quite immediately. I filed with them on Jan 5, and it didn’t get processed until Jan 13. Not sure why, but I am assuming they send out in batches.
@Dalen
There was a hold-up on the IRS side; it had nothing to do with Tax1099.
I prefer efile4biz.com. You can e-file only and then print and mail them yourself, or just have them handle both e-file and mailing. Super easy to use.
You still have 2 days. You can use an approved provider like TaxBandits for 1099s. They make it easy and send copies to your recipients.

^ the answer
Go to efilemyforms.com. It costs like five bucks per form, and you will have it done.

This. Been using them for years—so easy.

Track1099.com is only $2.99 per form to e-file with the IRS. It does cost extra to have them mail or send them to your recipients electronically, or you can print and distribute yourself.
@Pax
If they use Track1099 this year, can the non-profit still apply for their own IRS e-file account later?
There are several 3rd-party services that offer e-filing for a small fee per form. I’ve used TaxBandits and don’t have any complaints, but there are others.
There’s a database of companies that participate in Modernized E-file that may help: https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/approved-irs-e-file-for-business-providers.
Since you have 12 Forms 1099-NEC to file and no IRS e-file account, the easiest way to get this done on time is to use an IRS-authorized provider like TaxBandits. You can quickly upload your recipient details, e-file with the IRS today, and download printable copies to mail to your subcontractors—no need to wait 45 days for an IRS FIRE account.
Tax1099.com is $1.25 per form. Easy peasy.

Did yours go through fast? Mine still says pending after two whole days.
You may need to get a tax prep/payroll company to issue them for you. Not as cheap as doing it yourself, but the fees shouldn’t be outrageous.
Can you file 9 on paper and 3 electronically?
