What address should I file taxes from?

As I begin to file my taxes, I have reached a hurdle from the very start. I lived in Western North Carolina and worked there all year until Hurricane Helene happened. This resulted in me relocating to Florida temporarily. I plan to stay until the spring and return to North Carolina. I have found work here in Florida doing freelance work. I will not be returning to the same home I lived in NC (we rent, and the house was damaged by the storm), so I do not have an address there at this time. I’m having a hard time understanding what address I should be filing taxes from. I plan to return to NC and still have a valid DL there, but no official address at this time. I’ve only been in FL a short time, and it seemed wrong to file from here and then claim out of state for NC. Any information is appreciated!

I would put your Florida address in case the IRS has to mail you anything.

Just because you put Florida on your address doesn’t mean you won’t be filing a North Carolina return. You will file as a part-year resident on your North Carolina return for 2024.

@Milan
That makes sense, I sort of figured that would be the case. Thank you!

You should file as a full-year resident, since you are only temporarily out of the state.

Full year in NC and then add Florida address for mail purposes?

He should file as a full-year resident. He is only temporarily out of the state.

Probably so, I’m not sure when the hurricane hit North Carolina.
