Like the title says, I forgot to file and just realized it on 16OCT. Can I still e-file online? I’m living abroad right now, so mailing isn’t an option for me.
You can still e-file, but don’t wait too long. Many DIY options close down in October. You could try TaxAct, which is part of the IRS free file offers. It seems to work well for people living abroad.
TaxAct or OLT.com are the two options that usually work great for US expats. Both are accessible through Free File.
I think My Free Taxes from United Way would also work, but I haven’t tried it out in a while. If someone’s income is below $79k, they can use the VITA version of TaxSlayer for free.
Also, I just noticed they have a volunteer sign-up for remote support. I might check that out.
Yes, you can still e-file until sometime in November. But the exact date isn’t clear, so don’t delay.
If you owe anything, you will be facing penalties.
The IRS stops e-filing sometime in November, but they haven’t specified the exact cutoff date yet. More info here:
That said, individual software providers might have earlier deadlines. For instance, TurboTax states they will only accept e-filing for 2023 returns until Oct 31, 2024:
As mentioned, e-filing is still an option. But if you owe any tax, there’s a 5% per month failure to file penalty, capped at 25%.
